EGCG, short for epigallocatechin gallate, is the most important catechin polyphenol found in green tea.

This powerful antioxidant is said to reduce the risk of several forms of cancer, it helps protect brain cells from dying and it restores damaged neurons in the brain (very useful in finding a cure for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease), it also helps increase fat-loss (Chinese diet tea), improves cholesterol levels, improves oral hygiene (does green tea stain teeth), it eliminates acne (green tea and acne) and so on.

Epigallocatechin gallate, together with the other catechins, makes green tea as healthy as it is. EGCGRead more on the benefits of green tea.

Unlike black and oolong tea green tea has been heated (steamed).

As a result the antioxidants have not oxidized giving this tea far more health benefits in comparison with ‘normal’ tea or other drinks.

I do need to point out, though, it may have a negative influence on a pregnancy or on getting pregnant at all. Read more on green tea and pregnancy.
