Available in many shapes and forms, green tea supplements have been introduced to suit the needs of the busy (wo)men. Ideal also to people who do not like drinking heaps of green tea, taking green tea in the form of a supplement has become very popular.
Often, these supplements are marketed as having the same amount of antioxidants as a freshly brewed green tea.
That’s not true though!
As with the beverage, you can find both high and low quality green tea supplements.
Some hardly contain green tea extract while others contain so many chemical substances – such as sugars, acids, and artificial colors – that they balance out the health effects of the green tea extract.
The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) has not regulated green tea supplements so you’ll have no choice but to find out yourself which supplements work and which ones are too expensive or contain hardly any beneficial ingredients.
Look for the right ingredients!
Most brands advertise with either 90% polyphenols or 60% green tea extract but be aware that the most effective antioxidants responsible for the green tea health benefits are catechins, a group of polyphenols.
From this group it’s most important to get the epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG . Subject to much research, this green tea ingredient turns out to be the one responsible for the green tea health benefits!
Check out: green tea and health.
There are many other sorts of polyphenols that do not have the same beneficial effects. Tannins, for example, are also polyphenols (phenolic acids to be exact) but are responsible only for the astringent taste of tea.
Don’t get me wrong, they’re not bad for your health but they also don’t provide the health effects you want to accomplish through taking these supplements with green tea.
If you prefer taking a supplement instead of brewing green tea, and you are 100% positive you found the right one for you,
talk with your healthcare provider about
which dose is appropriate to you and
always stick to the recommended dosage!
